The above named John Baldridge with other thirteen members of his family was
captured at his residence on the first of June 1838 by the U. States troops then employed
under the direction of General Scott in collecting the Cherokees for their removal West
of the Mississippi
They were marched two days along with the troops and then left for some cause not
known to provide for themselves. They could not return to the residence whence they
had been forcibly removed, and now compelled to provide support for themselves.
They continued to do so (never receiving any rations from the U. States contractor) until
the 24th of September following when they were numbered in James Brown’s
detachment of Cherokee Emigrants and departed for the West
The claim is the Subsistence furnished by Capt John Baldridge for his family and their
animals from the time they were left by the troops until they were mustered into a
detachment
The Said John Baldridge died a short time prior to the departure of the detachment
which he had joined to Emigrate West, and in consequence of which the widow & heirs
of the deceased to wit – the widow gave me a power of attorney to attend this claim
against the United States which is respectfully submitted for consideration
